Marcus Ehning started riding at the age of seven with his sister at a riding school. He experienced ups and downs, but from the very beginning he demonstrated determination, regardless of his mount. He became German Pony Champion with Bright Ruby and double European Pony Champion in 1990 and 1991 with Starlight. His success continued after moving up to horses, winning four gold medals at the European Junior and Young Rider Championships over five years with three different horses: Orchidee, Opium and Talan.
Opium was the partner of his first Senior successes, with forty victories including the Nations Cup and the Warsaw Grand Prix. Already an international competitor, Marcus Ehning reached the highest level with the stallion For Pleasure, who joined his stables at the end of 1998. With him, he was crowned Olympic team champion in Sydney in 2000. In 2003, 2006 and 2010, he triumphed in the final of the FEI Jumping World Cup™. His top horses, including Noltes Küchengirl, Sandro Boy, Plot Blue, Cornado, Comme Il Faut and Prêt A Tout, allowed one of the greatest riders of all time to continue pursuing his art.
Now retired from his long career with these horses, Ehning has continued to achieve with the efficient Stargold, winning the Aachen CSI5* Grand Prix for the third time on 2 July 2023, as well as with Priam du Roset and Coolio 52, two key assets in his stable. In 2025, he added another podium to his record, finishing third with the German team at the European Championships in La Coruña.
