Originally from Cork, Ireland, Shane Sweetnam comes from a family of horsemen and began riding at the age of five. After earning a degree in computer science, he decided to devote his career to horses. In 2004, he moved to the United States to work with Olympic rider Margie Engle. After years of competition and success, he and his wife Alison opened Sweet Oak Farm, a training and boarding centre in Wellington, Florida.
At the end of 2021, Sweetnam discovered CSF James Kann Cruz, an Irish Sport Horse by Kannan bred by the Connolly family, now considered one of the best horses of his generation. He has competed in multiple Rolex Top 10 Finals and was European Champion in Gothenburg in 2017.
In 2025, Shane Sweetnam enjoyed an excellent season, achieving multiple victories and podiums in Nations Cups, as well as notable individual results, including third place in the Grand Prix of Ireland in Dublin, a Rolex Series event. At the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping in Geneva, he finished second in the Grand Prix aboard James Kann Cruz, just behind Kent Farrington.
